Battery Storage vs. Battery Back-Up

Solar power storage verbiage sometimes gets muddled and battery systems can be confusing. Battery storage and battery back up are two different systems which offer differing benefits and challenges.

Battery Storage

Battery storage systems are designed to work in conjunction with the grid. They provide additional power during peak demand times or when the grid is having issues. These typically use renewable energy systems (wind, solar, etc.) to supplement the grid's power. They can be configured to turn on and off based on the power received from the grid. These are grid-tied, so it's important to note that these systems will not work if the grid is down.

Battery Back-Up

Battery back-up systems are designed to be self-sustaining and do not rely on grid power. In the event of a grid failure or power outage, these systems will kick on so that you have uninterrupted power. The system will store up power when the grid is functioning normally and then release the power when the grid is down or interrupted. These can be configured to power the entire home or hooked up to select devices and appliances.

Depending on your situation and needs, it's important to assess the pros and cons of each system to determine which battery option is best for you. Call us today if you need assistance assessing your needs!
