Solar Panel Installation Timeline

Melissa Deaver

If you're interested in solar but curious about the timeline, here is a brief guide to our real-world experience of installing in Iowa.

  • Upon acceptance of a design, we request engineered drawings

  • 2 days - drawings come back

  • 2 days - application for permit from proper authority having jurisdiction (usually your city)

  • 2 weeks - material is ordered and received

  • 3 weeks – paperwork filed and accepted with your utility company

  • 1-3 days – installation

  • 2 weeks – inspector signs off

  • 1 week - establish inverter settings

  • 1 week - witness test with utility company

  • 6-8 weeks – utility company accepts certificate of completion and installs the bidirectional meter

  • System turn on!

From initial consultation to turn on date–approximately 3-5 months.

Several factors can affect the timeline, including material availability, workload at your utility provider, issues with the AHJ, etc.

Simply said, solar is not a quick turn-around. It's a slow game, but we will be with you every step of the way to guide you! The slightly lengthy process is worth it for an investment that will last you and your family for 30 years or longer!
